One billion Mozilla add-ons
The Mozilla add-ons team this past week announced that it had seen its billionth add-on downloaded since it started tracking in 2005.
This number only includes downloads from addons.mozilla.org, so the number may in fact be a lot higher as add-ons are also distributed through other channels.
Firefox add-ons have always been a key strength of the open source browser and as browsers ready for the next big battle – mobile – Firefox extensions could be the deciding factor. A couple of weeks ago the add-ons team added support for extensions in Fennec – its mobile browser – and the first ported extension.
Although Fennec is a little late coming to the mobile game, it has an enormous repository of extensions just waiting to be ported to the smaller platform. And when that happens competitors are going to have a hard time competing.
For more on Fennec see our first look at the browser.

Extensions a key strength??? No, “THE” key strength for me! I can find extensions to accomplish total personalization and automation of the WWW.
Now, I’m stuck with Firefox, but in an open and compliant kind-of-way!
