OpenSuse lays out roadmap for 11.2 – Fichte
OpenSuse 11.2 will be named “Fichte” and released in November. This is according to OpenSuse’s Stephan Kulow who said in an emailed announcement yesterday that the OpenSuse team would also now follow a fixed eight-month release schedule. Kulow said that OpenSuse 11.2 would be focused on integrating a number of key developments including KDE 4.3, GNOME 2.28 and Ext4, which will very likely become the default filesystem.
Releasing Fichte in November has some advantages over a September release, he said. Among these are that the team will have time to integrate Gnome 2.28 and not have to rely too heavily on contributions over the European summer months.
Also on the agenda for 11.2 is a Linux kernel 2.6.30 or better, a Yast Web interface for remote administration, better netbook support and USB images for install.
Standard public releases will happen on the Thursday before the 15th of the month, siad Kulow, which means that OpenSuse 11.2 can be expected Thursday 12 November. The gold master release will be finalised one week before that.
